Project Duration Nov 2022 - Dec 2022

Description In Nepal, increasing urbanization at an alarming rate has put immense pressure on the management of solid waste (SW). Solid Waste Management (SWM) consists of collection, transportation and treatment systems that are provided by municipalities or/and private companies. With the increase in population and the volume of waste, most of the wastes generated in municipalities are not being adequately managed threatening the environment and public health. Though, modern waste management techniques such as door-to-door collection, segregation, recycling and sanitary landfilling have been practiced by urban municipalities but are not introduced yet in most municipalities. Assessment of solid waste ensures reduction of SW to improve the living conditions of all inhabitants, protect natural resources, and develop livable and inclusive cities. The assessment helps in establishing a broad policy framework for solid waste management over short, medium and long-term planning periods.

Objective:
The main objective of the assessment is to access the existing of solid waste Management (SWM) scenario in Biratnagar MetropolitanCity.

The specific objectives that the study are:

  • To access the total solid waste generated in Biratnagar from households and different institutional setups.
  • To characterize solid waste including segregated percentage of organics, non-organics, recyclables, and inert.
  • To calculate the volume of the waste generated per person for residential setups, per rooms for hotels, per bed for hospitals and per institutes for other institutional setups.
  • To calculate the bulk density of waste with or without compaction and moisture content of wastes.
