Detail design of Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant in Tikapur Municipality, Kailali

Project Details

  • Client: Building Design Authority Pvt. Ltd (BDA)
  • Location: Tikapur Municipality
  • Year: February 2019- April 2019

Background:

Tikapur Municipality was declared an open defecation free on 2 February 2015. Despite such an extensive toilet coverage in the municipality, fecal sludge produced is usually disposed into the environment without any prior treatment. With such condition, a need for a faecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP) was felt necessary. A Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) is a treatment system that primarily treats the black and grey water before safely releasing the effluents to the environment.

The design of a FSTP in Tikapur Municipality is a part of the Government of Nepal (GoN) and Asian Development Bank (ADB)’s Third Small Towns Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Project (TSTWSSSP). Tikapur was selected as one of the 12 towns in first batch of the TSTWSSSP.

A joint venture of Building Design Authority (P) Ltd. (BDA) & Plush Engineers and Architects (P) Ltd. was awarded the Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Project in the municipality. The project involves sanitation components and water supply components among others, of which FSM is a part of. In this process, BDA approached EcoConcern due to the organization’s experience in FSM.

EcoConcern was assigned the task of FS sampling at site and determination of FS quantity, FS characterization analysis to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for designing the FSTP. While doing so, detail consideration of the topographic, geographic, and environmental factors of the proposed site for the FSTP construction and operation was to be considered.

Scope of Work:

  • Sampling of FS at site and lab testing.
  • FS quantification.
  • Identification of ideal components of FSTP for the primary, secondary and tertiary treatment of FS, utilizing data from characterization studies.
  • Preparation of detailed engineering design and cost estimation of the proposed system.
  • Preparation of detailed drawing along with relevant specification of treatment components.
  • Preparation of an Operation and Maintenance Manual for regular operation of FSTP
  • Submission of the DPR report.
  • Design, drawing (civil, electrical, sanitary) and cost estimate of Staff Quarter, Garage, Generator Room and Laboratory.

Project Accomplishments:

Situational analysis was conducted through FS Characterization study and information from secondary sources including Topographic survey reports, City Sanitation plan, IEE reports, municipal profile, etc. The quantification of FS was carried out using Collection Method using reference from Charali FSTP design. Fecal sludge characterization was done based on the samples collected from seven samples in six clusters representing two households, and one each of the remaining clusters (public toilet, hotel, school, commercial building and hospital) for 19 physiochemical and biological parameters. On the basis of the characterization of fecal sludge and the estimated quantity, FSTP was designed in Tikapur Municipality with temperature, BOD, COD and TS as the key parameters. The cost estimate of the FSTP was calculated based on the latest pricing list of the materials published by Kailali District to include all the components of the finalized Design Drawings.
