Detail design of Faecal Sludge Treatment Plant in 4 municipalities-Shuklaphanta, Godawari, Dhangadhi and Bhimdatta

Project Details

  • Client: Building Design Authority Pvt. Ltd (BDA)
  • Location: Shuklaphanta, Godawari Municipality, Dhangadhi, Bhimdatta Municipality
  • Year: 2018-2021

Background

Shuklaphanta and Godawari Municipality

The declaration of Shuklaphanta Municipality and Godawari Municipality to be an Open Defecation Free (ODF) municipality created a need for a faecal sludge treatment plant (FSTP) since faecal sludge produced were likely to be discharged into the environment without any prior treatment due to unavailability of treatment services in both the areas.

The proposed FSTP in Godawari Municipality and Shuklaphanta Municipality is a part of the Regional Urban Development Project (RUDP) and BDA & JV team was assigned the task to design the FSTP in the project municipalities. The FSTP is expected to treat FS collected from the households, commercial buildings, schools, hospitals (faecal sludge), and public toilets in Shuklaphanta and Godawari municipality before safely releasing it to the environment. The design exercise was conducted based on the socio-economic and demographic information to estimate the FS quantity, FS characterization analysis, and detail consideration of the topographic, geographic, and environmental factors of the proposed site for the FSTP construction and operation.

Dhangadhi and Bhimdatta Municipality (Ongoing)

Dhangadhi and Bhimdatta are two of the four municipalities in province 7 selected under the Regional Urban Development Project (RUDP). The project aims to improve the living standards and quality of urban services in eight towns in the Terai region through planning, infrastructure investments and institutional strengthening.

A joint venture of Building Design Authority (P) Ltd. (BDA), ITECO Nepal (Pvt) ltd, Soil Test Pvt Ltd and Udaya Consultancy (pvt) Ltd (JV) were awarded the works related to the urban water supply and sanitation (Regional Urban Development Project, RUDP) in the municipalities. The project involves sanitation components and water supply components among others, of which FSM is a part. In this process, BDA approached EcoConcern due to the organization’s experience in FSM.

The role of EcoConcern was to understand the need of the primary client and address the issues and requirements of experts and provide expert services in the design of FSTP. EcoConcern presented the progress of the project periodically and participated in the discussions to finalise the design.

Scope of work

  • Sampling of FS at site and lab testing.
  • FS quantification.
  • Assessment and comparison of various treatment technologies and selecting the most appropriate option for the local situation.
  • Identification of ideal components of FSTP for the primary, secondary and tertiary treatment of FS, utilizing data from characterization studies.
  • Preparation of detailed engineering design and cost estimation of the proposed system.
  • Preparation of detailed drawing along with relevant specification of treatment components.
  • Submission of DPR report.
  • Layout and estimate of Laboratory

Project Accomplishments

Shuklaphanta and Godawari Municipality

Situational analysis was conducted through FS Characterisation study and Topographic survey and information from secondary sources including Topographic survey reports, City Sanitation plan, IEE reports, municipal profile, etc. FS quantification was conducted using population as the basis for quantity estimation and other assumptions. FS samples were collected from various clusters like residential households, commercial areas, educational institute, hotels, hospitals and public toilet. For both the municipalities, a total of seven FS samples each were collected from six clusters representing two households, and one each of the remaining clusters which were tested for 19 physiochemical and biological parameters.

On the basis of the characterization of fecal sludge, FSTP was designed in Shuklaphanta Municipality and Godawari Municipality with BOD and COD as the primary reference of pollutants. Cost Estimate of the FSTP was calculated based on the latest pricing list of the materials published by Kanchanpur District (Shuklaphanta M) and Kailali District (Godawari M) to include all the components of the finalized Design Drawings.
