Project Location Lazimpat, Kathmandu

Project Duration Sep 2024 to Sep 2024

Description In the Kathmandu Valley, on-site sanitation (OSS) systems such as pit latrines and septic tanks are still widely used, especially in peri-urban and rural areas where sewer connections are limited. About 30% of households use these systems, while the remaining 70% are connected to sewer systems. However, wastewater treatment infrastructure is minimal, with less than 5% of collected wastewater being treated before being discharged into rivers or open spaces.

The management of faecal sludge from OSS is critical, as it is often not disposed of properly due to the lack of adequate treatment facilities. The faecal sludge from these pits and tanks is frequently dumped into rivers or open environments without treatment, which results in significant environmental and public health risks. This improper handling is likened to "open defecation" in terms of its impact. Addressing these challenges requires robust faecal sludge management (FSM) systems to ensure safe collection, treatment, and disposal of sludge. With growing population pressure and environmental concerns, expanding proper sanitation facilities, including faecal sludge management in every household, is essential to protect public health and the local ecosystem. To address these challenges and promote on-site sanitation facilities for the discharge from private toilets, the Embassy of France requested to install the RTI Eco Septic Tank in their one building toilet to promote the safe on-site management of Feacal Sludge.

Objective
The main objective is to install the RTI septic tank (one unit) in the toilet located inside Embassy of France,  Lazimpat.
