Project Partner Environment and Public Health Organization (ENPHO)
Project Location Mahalaxmi Municipality, Lalitpur
Project Duration Jun 2021 to Jun 2021
Description Onsite sanitation or Non-sewered Sanitation System is the major problem in wastewater management in most of the cities of Nepal. Mahalaxmi Municipality one of the rapidly urbanizing municipalities in Nepal located in the southern periphery of Kathmandu Valley is also facing the safe management of Feacal Sludge from households. Two-third population still rely on onsite sanitation services. Households call upon informal desludging services only when septic tanks begin to overflow.
Given that Municipality was declared ODF in 2017, additional sewered network expansion has not been programmed for immediate future, and that non-sewered areas are somewhat scattered, municipal authorities realized importance of non- sewered sanitation solutions for ensuring vision of a “clean, hygienic, prosperous city”. Installation of Eco Septic tank can be effective solution for onsite sanitation problem, as it would facilitate utilization of sludge and promote decentralized method of sludge treatment which encourages Water, Sanitation and Hygiene on community level. The strategy is also using a sustainable method of recharging water table through percolation of treated effluent into the soil which can solve the problem of water scarcity. In order to assess the Fecal sludge Management in Mahalaxmi Municipality and promote onsite sanitation facility for discharge from private toilets, ENPHO in collaboration with EcoConcern will be constructing a Demonstration Unit model of Eco-Septic tank at four different private houses in Mahalaxmi Municipality.
Objective:
- To install the Eco-Septic tank system at four different vulnerable households located at Mahalaxmi Municipality
