Description TA support for institutionalizing healthcare waste management as per national standards and operating procedures is a two-year proejct aimed at operating at 13 different COVID-19 designated hospitals across the nation. This project has been funded through Support to the Health Sector Strategy (GOZ-S2HSS) with a primary motive of managing healthcare waste in slected government hospitals of Nepal, thereafter, providing excellent exemplar for other healthcare faciities to replicate. The objective of this proejct is to strengthen the capacities of the selected hospitals to comply with the national healthcare waste managment standard and operating procedures and assist in establishing good HCWM practices at facility level.
In this context, Green Path Nepal - EcoConcern JV (GPN-EC JV) provided technical assistance to 4 different government hospitals (Provincial Hospital Bhadrapur, Gajendra Narayan Singh Hospital, Madhesh Institute of Health Sciences, Bharatpur Hospital) of Eastern Nepal for the implementation of the project. This proejct is divided in two phases. In first phase, logistic including autoclave, washing machine and support to construction/refurbishment of waste treatment centre was completed and in the second phase, technical assistance ot institutionalize the National HCWM Standards and Operating Procedures, 2020 at the selected four hospitals has been supported from January 2022 till December 2023.
The main objective of this project was to institutionalize the HCWM system in all 4 hospitals according to National HCWM Standards and Operating Procedures 2020. Whereas the specific objectives were to:
- Validate and test autoclave operations and maintenance procedures
- Establish a model ward for HCWM and facilitate replication in other units
- Provide training and orientation sessions on HCWM
- Offer on-site mentoring and coaching to support hospitals in improving waste management practices
- Implement regular data compilation, monitoring, and reporting mechanisms
- Document and disseminate processes involved in healthcare waste management
- Coordinate to link Global Green Healthy Hospitals (GGHH) network for peer learning of international practices on HCWM
