What is Hardness?

The hardness in water samples is caused due to presence of Calcium and Magnesium ions which is expressed in terms of equivalent quantities of Calcium carbonate.

If hardness of water exceeds 200 mg/L scale formation might occur else if it is lower than 100 mg/L corrosion can occur.
